This photo was taken in 1972. In the background is a 1971 Arctic Cat 440 Panther with a Sachs engine. In front is a 1963 Polaris Sno-Traveler with a 7hp Kohler. It was traded in at the local Arctic Cat dealer, where we bought it. We would ride it around at local ice fishing contests. We still have it.

1973 Polaris TX 500 Limited I cut the hood open and redesigned it to let the engine stick out like the earlier model TX's. I dropped it in the Cannon River the first time out and spent the rest of the winter with a frozen seat that would thaw out after riding for awhile and soak my snowmobile suit.

I'm 13 years old in this shot (yes, a big boy) and this was my first trip to the rally. Uncle Don was a longtime Jackpine Gypsy, and owned a watch shop in Sturgis. At this time, my interest was all dirt-check out the lineman boots, but I went out to spend a couple of days during the Rally to see what it was all about. The Captain America helmet shows I was a fashion-forward kid. The bike is Don's beloved HD Hydra Glide, bought new in 1949. Hardtail, of course, with the big sprung tractor saddle, with custom upholstery that looks to be in a 1950s pattern. The matching bags rounded out the deal. Note the Von Dutch-esque pinstripe work on the front fender, and the tiny rectangular windshield.
The Dakota theater in the background is showing Dirty Little Billy, a 1972 release starring Michael J. Pollard as Billy the Kid. Note the Chat n Chew cafe beside the theater. Also note the Moto Guzzi touring bike to the right.

Beartooth Highway (US 212) noth of Cooke City MT. which is 6 miles from the Northeast entrance to Yellowstone National Park. This stretch of the highway is open from Memorial Day to Columbus Day, "Americas most beautiful roadway" by Charles Kuralt of CBS news. National Forest, with ample 4 wheeling opportunities through the summer season. When the highway closes the opportunities change to snowmobiling .
Put it on your bucket list . It's something you have to see .
